Regional forum hosted to educate local health directors, department staff, elected officials, and community partners on employee clinics and worksite wellness initiatives in North Carolina

June 5, 2008, Asheboro, NC – Health directors, local elected officials, health department finance, human resource, and health education directors, and community partners from each county in the south central region, in addition to those from other regions of the state, were in attendance at the first regional forum on employee clinics and worksite wellness initiatives, hosted by the South Central Partnership for Public Health (SCPPH) at the NC Zoo Stedman Education Center.  This unique forum is timely given recent buzz around the success of several employee clinics currently open for business in NC.  Clinics are seeing improved health of county employees and costs saved.

June 5 ForumThe forum was designed to showcase different types of employee clinic and worksite wellness initiatives run by local health departments throughout central North Carolina.  Forum feature was a panel discussion where panelists described the populations they served, how the clinic got started, clinic services provided, money saved, provider set-up, physical location, challenges, pharmaceutical services provided, success stories, and whether or not the clinic is a part of the health department.

ForumAlso present was special guest and private industry employee clinic advocate and expert, Keith Crisco, President and CEO of Asheboro Elastics.  Mr. Crisco provided guests with insight into his experience and successes with running an employee clinic from the private sector perspective. (Click here to view Mr. Crisco's presentation.) Following Mr. Crisco’s presentation was an open exhibitors’ forum where guests could network, meet potential vendors and talk with counties running clinics and worksite wellness initiatives, and collect worksite wellness toolkits provided by NC’s Eat Smart Move More campaign (download toolkits for free).

The SCPPH was honored to have the following six panelists to share their expertise and experiences at the forum: (Click on the panelists’ names to view their presentations. Note: Presentations were optional so some panelists did not have one.)

  • Debbie Bradley, Employee Clinic Coordinator, Catawba County
  • Jim Bruckner (speaking on Buncombe County’s clinic), Health Director, Macon County
  • Jimmy Hines, Assistant Health Director, Cleveland County
  • Johanna Ray, Wellness Manager, Cabarrus Health Alliance
  • Cheryl Speight, Health Education Supervisor, Richmond County
