Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the RALT?

The Real-time Assessment and Learning Tool (RALT) allows you to determine your training needs based on completing a quick and easy self-assessment of your current knowledge and skills against established public health competencies. The RALT currently allows self-assessments for:

  • Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Council of Linkages)
  • Applied Epidemiology Competencies (CDC/CSTE)
  • Public Health Preparedness and Response Core Competencies (CDC/ASPPH)

The RALT also provides an assessment instrument for the Public Health Preparedness Capabilities (CDC).

Once you have completed your assessment, the RALT will generate a "snapshot" report which identifies your areas of training need and provides an initial list of trainings relevant to competency or capability-based training needs.*

How many RALT assessments can I complete?

You can complete as many RALT assessments as you wish. If you have already completed an assessment, you will see a link to review the snapshot report, identified by the date you completed it and optional label.

Can RALT be used in public health accreditation for my agency?

The RALT is designed to assess individual training needs based on established public health competencies, and can be useful in the development of (not substitute for) a department-specific workforce development plan. The RALT can also be a useful tool in identifying relevant trainings from the NCIPH Training Website for staff to complete. RALT assessment data may also be used to help identify relevant training resources from other training providers/systems.

Where can I find previous RALT snapshot reports?

You can complete as many RALT assessments as you wish. If you have already completed an assessment, you will see a link to review the snapshot report, identified by the date you completed it and optional label. You can also view your snapshot reports under "My Account" and then clicking on the "View Assessments" tab.

Why do I see different assessment questions and responses for each competency and capability set?

The RALT assessment questions and response choices are based on published assessment tools and surveys specific to each competency set.

What trainings are included in the RALT snapshot report?

All trainings included in a RALT snapshot report come from the NCIPH Training Website at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. RALT assessment data may also be used to help identify relevant training resources from other training providers/systems.

How do I understand my RALT snapshot report?

The snapshot report provides a summary of your training needs assessment. Your report is designed to help you identify areas of individual training need and give you an initial list of trainings (from the NCIPH Training Website) matched to those training needs.

For each Domain that you assessed, trainings that are available through the NCIPH Training Website will automatically display for competencies that you indicated a limited/basic knowledge or skill level, or for capabilities that are included in your agency's planning. Trainings in the list that you have already completed are indicated with a to the right.

A "View Available Trainings" link will appear for competencies or capabilities that you indicated an intermediate/proficient/comfortable knowledge or skill level, or for capabilities that are not currently included in your agency's planning. If you would like to explore training options for this level, simply click on the link to view those training lists. Trainings in the list that you have already completed are indicated with a to the right.

For competencies or capabilities that you indicated as not applicable, trainings are not displayed.

How can I use my RALT Snapshot Report?

You can use your snapshot report to identify training needs based on your results. Based on what you indicated in your assessment, you can display competencies or capabilities and associated trainings where you have an identified need, as well as for those that you may not have an identified need but would like to explore more in-depth. RALT assessment data may also be used to help identify relevant training resources from other training providers/systems. Your snapshot report can be printed and reviewed with your supervisor to assist in the development of a training plan and schedule.

How can I find RALT Snapshot Report trainings in TRAIN?

The snapshot report provides a summary of your training needs assessment. If you indicated that you are a TRAIN user in your assessment, your snapshot report will provide TRAIN Course IDs for trainings that are displayed. You can search in TRAIN for that particular course using the Course ID number.

How can I use the RALT for the Public Health Preparedness Capabilities?

The RALT also provides an assessment instrument for the Public Health Preparedness Capabilities (CDC). This assessment is primarily designed to assess agency-level capacity, but can also be used to assess individual training needs. For each Capability you assess, trainings that are available through the NCIPH Training Website will display for functions that you indicated are included in your agency's planning.
